Managing Low Back Pain

Managing Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain is the worst in terms of being overall debilitating. It can literally affect everything you do, from sleeping to sitting to standing and everything in between. In Sports and Movement Therapy, I see a lot of people with this problem. That being said, what to do when you experience this issue is your call. From a therapeutic perspective here are some tips I would recommend to get yourself back in the ballgame. After all, our passion is to exercise, work hard / play hard, move and to have fun and of course, not be whining about our back!

If you do experience Low Back Pain, here are some Steps to consider:

  1. Get a proper evaluation and treatment. Understanding what’s at the root cause of your low back pain is the most important and critical step. Get as much information as you can that’s related to your problem. If it’s severe enough, see an orthopedic doctor and get an MRI or X-Rays from your Chiropractor. If you’ve already done that and still have pain and don’t want to have surgery, see a Sports Movement Therapist that can help determine the Neuromuscular issues and reset any Mechano-receptor imbalances.
  2. Design a specific proactive game plan that can help you strengthen weak Inhibited muscles that impact your Lumbar stability. This will include strengthening Core Muscles such as the Multifidis, Obliques, Transverse Abdominals and Quadratus Lumborum.
  3. Mix in the proper amount of flexibility training and Yoga to bring balance to the spine. This includes SacroIliac , Psoas, Hamstrings, Quad and Adduction/Abduction flexibility and strength.
  4. Be diligent about executing your strengthening and flexibility program at least 3-4 times per week.
  5. Bring mindfulness to your physical health, so if you start to experience an issue, back off of as many activities as you can to get the proper rest to allow yourself time to heal.

Always remember and never forget, Health is Wealth!
